Search engine optimisation is incredibly important for businesses. When you optimise your webpages, including your blog posts, you're making your website more visible to people who are looking for keywords associated with your product or services via Google. It can be pretty tricky tactics to master with Google's huge amount of algorithm updates and tools. Plus it will impact your inbound marketing results.
How do you know what matters and what doesn't? In this blog, we are going to look at a really awesome tool created by Google to help you understand what Google's robots are trying to do and how to improve your overall SEO performance. Plus, this tool is free for all businesses.
It is called Google Search Console!
Once you get inside, you're going to be presented with a screen very similar to this.
It will highlight how your website is going. Over on the left-hand side, you will see menu options like; messages, search appearance, search traffic, Google index, and crawl.
ProTip: Google Search Console was formally known as Google Webmaster Tools.
This is a powerful tool in order to help you understand what's going on with your website and improve overall inbound marketing. Also, be aware that this is the only way that Google will communicate with you on any changes or any problems with your website that could be affecting your inbound marketing startegies. This is one reason why it's so important to set up Google Webmaster Tools. Using the link provided here, you can great results on how to set up your Google Search Console Tool.
Once you've setup your Google Search Console, Google will need to verify that you are the owner of the website. That is done by you copying a little bit of code onto your website to validate that you are the owner. For some people, it will be easier if you just engage your web developer to do that for you or you can engage a company like, Crocodile Marketing, and we'll be happy to do that for you.
ProTip: When you set up your Search Console, use the same Google account as you've used for your Google Analytics and your Google AdWords accounts, if you use those tools. By having all of these platforms using the same Google account makes it easier to link them together and provide you a better insight on what's happening in your analytics and in your paid search.
New Messages from Google
For any messages or errors that Google finds with your website, they will be reported to you in messages.
Search Traffic & Keyword Ranking
Another great area to look at is to look on search traffic. Here you will find things like, search analytics, links to your site, internal links, and international targeting.
Search analytics will give you an idea of how many people are coming to your website. It also gives you how many impressions and a position on where that keyword is positioned is sitting for your particular website. As you scroll down, you will get an understanding of what keywords you are ranking for. While it's not the most accurate information, it's not a bad place to get an understanding of what's happening with your website. It makes for some interesting observations.
Backlinks To Your Website Found by Google
When you click on links to your site, this is the number of backlinks that Google has found that are linking to your website. It’s a good way to measure how many other links are linking to you. Every once in awhile, it is worth it for you to go through the links to your website and make sure that none of them are coming from spam sites.
If you do find that there are links that you do not want, there is a process called disavow. This is a way for you to tell Google that you did not authorise or that is not a website that you want to have associated with your website.
Disavow is a very technical process that if you get it wrong, it can have dramatic effects on your website ranking. Only do this yourself if you know what you are doing. If you don't know what you are doing, get the advice or service of a professional.
Manual Action Alerts
Another important area to look at is manual actions. If Google has found a virus on your website or has deemed your website as doing a lot of blackhat spamming, you will have a manual notice placed here. If this does occur, it is really a bad sign for you. It needs to be addressed immediately. While you have a manual action, your website will no longer be listed in Google search results. Should this ever happen, and sometimes even people who are not meaning to try to trick Google, can find themselves in this area.
Quite often, companies who hire an SEO company offshore from India or those emails that you get where they'll promise you the best SEO rankings for like $100 a month, are quite dangerous, simply because you don't know the quality and you don't know the company's procedures. For this reason, I have come across quite a few companies over the years have fallen prey to this poor service and it has taken a lot of effort to clean up the mess.
In short, I recommend making sure you have registered for your Google Search Console. It will be a big help to understand how Google is looking at and interpreting your website. Overall, is a good place to start when you want to improve your own SEO rankings.
